Abstract Scope |
A systematic experimental investigation of the room temperature mechanical response of 5052 T6 aluminum is presented. The initial texture showed mild anisotropy in the plane of the sheet. Uniaxial tension tests were conducted for seven orientations in the plane of the sheet to quantify the effects of texture on the macroscopic plastic properties. Local strains were monitored using Digital Image Correlation. Irrespective of the orientation, it was found that this material displays Poitevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effects. Using DIC to monitor the local strain-rate provide insights on the deformation process in such Al alloys. Challenges in calculating the Lankford’s coefficient for material exhibiting PLC are discussed. The anisotropy in both yield stress, Lankford’s coefficients, and the orientation of localization bands is characterized for uniaxial tension. Tensile tests on notch specimen and plane strain specimen provide insights of the occurrence of the PLC effect for other loadings paths. |
