Abstract Scope |
The fatigue crack initiation (FCI) and short crack growth behaviour (SCG) of Ti-6Al-4V are not well-understood. Ultrasonic fatigue tests were conducted on mesocantilevers to achieve SN data to a gigacycle. An interrupted ultrasonic fatigue method was developed based upon the change in deflection angles of a mesocantilever to evaluate the stress field in vicinity of a crack tip and crack propagation rate at different short crack lengths. An insitu engagement device was also created to simulate the stress evolution of a crack tip within a single fatigue cycle. The interrupted samples of various short crack lengths are strained at progressive deflection angles and characterised using HR-EBSD in order to evaluate the GND density evolution and local strain mapping ahead of the progressing crack tip. The ΔK and SCG rate will also be evaluated in relation to the crack tip stresses and plastic zone at different crack lengths. |
