Abstract Scope |
Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a technology renowned for producing large-scale parts in short time frames. One complexity with operating the system is selecting efficient printing parameters that do not compromise the strength of parts. The study focuses on understanding the effect wire feed rate and dwell time have on the characteristics, microstructure, and strength of objects printed in mild steel. The study produced 25 samples using parameters that varied, with dwell times between layers ranging from 0 to 360 seconds, followed by wire feed rates ranging from 38 mm/min to 216 mm/min. Each test had thermocouples logging the heat accumulation in the baseplate. All samples were characterized by a microstructure study, layer height, penetration of the weld into the plate, and heat accumulation in the baseplate. The study concluded the impact the various parameters had on the characteristics of the samples printed using mild steel. |
