Abstract Scope |
High-energy, long-lasting, and cost-effective energy storage is critical for clean energy to enable the widespread use of intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar in the electric grid as well as expanding electrified transportation. Manganese oxides have a rich chemistry where the materials are of particular interest as positive electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage due to the redox active manganese centers, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Manganese oxides are suitable for use in non-aqueous lithium battery systems as well as in aqueous zinc anode batteries where the complexity of the electrochemical reactivity demands detailed inquiry.
Careful design of synthesis methods allows deliberate control of physiochemistry, morphology and chemical stoichiometry (i.e. vacancies and central cation type). The associated electrochemistry and detailed characterization of the phase transformations in non-aqueous and aqueous electrolytes under non-equilibrium electrochemical conditions will be described. |
