Abstract Scope |
Relatively unexplored inter-lanthanide ternary oxides permit an expanded composition space to explore
the unique properties of 4f electron materials, as they pertain to optical, magnetic, and electronic
devices. Of specific interest is the formation of inter-lanthanide perovskites with increased disorder and
lattice distortion, enabling increased radiation tolerance. The formation of inter-lanthanide perovskites
are impaired due to variation in atomic radii. To overcome this challenge, cations were homogeneously
mixed via the polymeric steric entrapment (PSE) process to synthesize ErLuO3, SmLuO3, LaLuO3, and
LaGdO3. The phase and composition of these compounds were verified with powder X-ray diffraction
analysis (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). XRD results on all four compounds
showed good agreement with phase stability models. A comparison of this XRD data with predictions
from these models and supplementary discussion on the relevance of this work to new discoveries in
defect kinetics and cation structures is provided. |
