Abstract Scope |
Multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) have been proposed as potential structural material candidates for next-generation nuclear reactors because of their notable mechanical properties and environmental resistance. Due to their novelty, little is understood regarding the effects of irradiation on their microstructure. An area of particular interest is radiation-induced segregation (RIS) at grain boundaries. To better understand the role of specific alloying elements on RIS, we systematically quantified RIS at high-angle grain boundaries and loop microstructures in an ion-irradiated Fe-Ni-Cr alloy with or without Mn and Co additions as a function of dose using transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The results show that adding these alloying elements in solid solution quantitatively and qualitatively reduces the amount and morphology of RIS at high doses compared to the base ternary alloy. |
