Abstract Scope |
It is increasingly possible to use advanced manufacturing techniques, including but not limited to additive manufacturing, to manufacture gradient materials where aspects of the materials state (including composition, microstructure, and defect structure) and the attending properties are spatially controlled. This presentation will present new research into the possibilities associated with gradient materials, including specifically the control of composition and microstructure in three-dimensions, the characterization (composition, structure, properties) over multiple length scales, and the role that modeling plays in both their design and ultimate realization. New research will be shown, including (i) compositional control through selective vaporization of elements; (ii) microstructural control in uni-composition materials through thermal gradients; and (iii) the characterization of spatially registered microstructure, elastic and plastic properties in 3D. The composition space will include existing and new alloys. |
