Abstract Scope |
Additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) is a near-net solid-state manufacturing process, enabled by shear-based plastic deformation, that characteristically enables fully dense deposits exhibiting equiaxed microstructures and highly refined second-phase particles. This study explores the viability of AFSD as a material upcycling technology for various lightweight automotive alloys, which often suffer from impurities and reduced performance when recycled using conventional methodologies. Multi-scale assessments of key mechanical properties and microstructural features were undertaken in specimens additively manufactured using feedstocks composed of cast alloys and scrap metal from secondary processing. The findings demonstrate AFSD’s potential to give secondary life to scrap metals by upcycling machining chips into structures with enhanced properties thereby promoting sustainable manufacturing practices. |
