Abstract Scope |
While the concurrence of magnetic and structural changes generally produces a first-order magnetic phase transition, the series of GdNi1-xCox (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.15) intermetallic compounds exhibits unusual second-order phase transitions despite coupled magnetic and elastic phenomena. The samples show large cryogenic magnetocaloric effect (MCE) tunable between 70 and 115 K with varying x(Co) concentration, comparable with the best known potential magnetocaloric materials exhibiting second-order phase transition. A theoretical model based on the mean field theory approximation is formulated to describe magnetic, magnetoelastic, and magnetocaloric properties of the title alloys.
