Abstract Scope |
Short range order/ordering (SRO) in alloys has been investigated for at least 75 years. Recently, there has been considerable interest in SRO and its potential effects in medium- and high-entropy alloys (MEAs/HEAs). Unlike in simpler alloys such as binaries, SRO characterization in MEAs/HEAs is not straightforward. We recently investigated the kinetics of SRO in the equiatomic CrCoNi MEA by electrical resistivity measurements which can sensitively detect changes in SRO. At intermediate temperatures, the resistivity curves show the expected sigmoidal dependence on time. Samples annealed for different times and temperatures were then tensile tested at 298 K and 77 K. We find no significant SRO-induced changes in plastic deformation behavior, including yield stress, flow stress, slip localization, dislocation structure, and stacking fault energy. Our results suggest that although SRO can indeed be controlled by heat treatment, skepticism is warranted when evaluating claims that it can be used to tune mechanical behavior. |
