Abstract Scope |
Future requirements for sustainability and recycling will lead to greater variation in the composition of secondary Al alloys supplied for casting applications. To investigate the relationships between alloy composition and the formation of beneficial or detrimental intermetallic phases, a large number of calculations are required. Coping this, we have developed a two-level computational alloy screening approach. In a first step, the Gulliver-Scheil model is used to calculate the solidification path for several thousand alloy compositions. These results are statistically analysed, e.g. to determine the fractions of intermetallic phases. In a second step, computationally more extensive phase field simulations are performed for certain compositions of interest, providing more detailed information on the distribution of intermetallic phases within the microstructure. For the intermetallic phases alpha and beta-AlFeSi, the differences between Gulliver-Scheil and phase field predictions caused by finite diffusion and the effects of nucleation undercooling are discussed. |
