Abstract Scope |
Hydrometallurgy approached based on its rich aqueous chemistry and reaction process engineering fundamentals is providing a highly fertile ground for innovation beyond classical extraction of metals. It is in this context that our work over the past twenty years has sought to develop clean environmental technologies and advanced energy materials that become imperative pillars of our collective mobilization towards a sustainable low-carbon economy. Highlights from this research exemplifying the integration of hydrometallurgical engineering and materials science are to be presented. First, we will discuss the immobilization of hazardous elements from waste streams via innovative crystallization and photocatalytic-induced adsorption and deposition processes. Second, we will talk about hydrothermal synthesis of nanostructured electrode and ceramic electrolyte materials and how their properties impact Li-ion battery (LIB) electrochemical performance. And we will finish with some exciting research on direct recycling of LIB materials and carbon-free production of iron from iron ore by aqueous electrolysis. |
