Abstract Scope |
Rare earth metals(REMs) have a very strong affinity for oxygen and sulfur; consequently, they are expected to be effectively used as a deoxidizer and desulfurizer in secondary refining of steel. In addition, they have beneficial effects in removing or modifying deleterious types of oxide and sulfide inclusions and are capable of improving steel toughness and formability. During secondary refining, fluxes containing CaO and Al are usually added to the ladle for desulfurization and deoxidation. When both La and Ce are added in addition to these, CaO-AlO1.5-LaO1.5-CeO1.5 system is generated due to exchange redox reaction. Hence, knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of the CaO-AlO1.5-LaO1.5-CeO1.5 system is indispensable. In this research, sulfide capacity(Cs2-) of this system at 1873 K were measured by using gas-slag equilibrating technique. So far, CS2- of CaO-AlO1.5-LaO1.5 system at 1873 K were measured and suggested that LaO1.5 has a desulfurization capacity intermediate between CaO and AlO1.5. |
