Abstract Scope Nanomagnetism and spintronics are ubiquitous in our everyday lives so that manipulating magnetism on ever smaller and faster scales has been a huge endeavour over the past few decades. Polarised x-rays give unprecedented insights into the control of magnetic ordering on the nanoscale in ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials. By constructing vector maps of the local magnetic ordering we have shown how macroscopic measurements contain hidden complexity at the nanoscale. In this presentation I will discuss the switching of Ni magnetic domains using strain generated by a piezoelectric and demonstrate how previous results indicating a 90° switching of the magnetisation direction are more complex at the nanoscale. The switching of antiferromagnetic domains in CuMnAs can be achieved using current pulses, but the switching is inhomogeneous. I will show how defect mapping in CuMnAs can be correlated with magnetic imaging to understand complex antiferromagnetic domain switching from the nanoscale to the microscale.
