Abstract Scope |
Brian Gleeson has dedicated his professional career to high temperature oxidation – mainly to the kind physical metallurgists think of – corrosion! Less known is his collaboration with us process metallurgist to which high temperature oxidation means metal loss, for example in the case of liquid aluminium oxidation forming so called dross, In this presentation, we will look further into the mechanisms with how the break-away oxidation of aluminium-magnesium alloys can be prevented by for example adding ppm amounts of Beryllium to the alloy or by adding a small amount of CO2 to the oxidizing air atmosphere over the alloy. The transfer of knowledge between disciplines can sometime be essential in understanding such mechanisms.
In a detour, we will also look at Brians role of matchmaking between physical- and process metallurgists in understanding the role of moisture in dusting of liquid silicon. |
