Abstract Scope |
The conventional elastic field of a Volterra edge dislocation has some long-standing nonphysical attributes that affect the displacement boundary conditions used in atomistic simulations and interpretation of dislocation interactions in simulations and high resolution TEM images. These deficiencies include violation of symmetry requirements of the displacement field, a shift of the dislocation origin, and a long-range logarithmic divergence of displacement with distance from the dislocation. A revised displacement field is proposed that superposes a line force on the conventional solution and modifies the arctan function and the associated branch cuts to capture relative shear or opening across atomic planes. The revised solution has a modified stress field, which augments the dislocation line energy as well as interaction energy and forces with other defects such as dislocations, free surfaces, grain boundaries, and interfaces. |
