Abstract Scope |
Recent evidence suggests that mixed multi-cation, multi-anion (oxide-sulfate) deposits can accelerate the degradation of alloys at temperatures above sodium sulfate-based corrosion. Key insights regarding the effect of alloying elements and the gas atmosphere on the corrosion mechanisms are essential for the development of novel alloys/coatings. This work systematically explored the effect of the air-SO2 and air-SO2-water vapor atmospheres on the degradation of alloys and coatings in the presence of mixed oxide-sulfate and sulfate deposits. The alloys and coatings were selected to understand the effect of Cr, Si, and other minor alloying elements on the formation of thermally grown oxides and corrosion behavior in the presence of deposits. Samples were characterized using an image analysis approach to compare the degradation intensity under varying parameters. The results enhance the understanding of the key parameters affecting the corrosion mechanisms and provide insights regarding the development of alloys and coatings for next-generation turbine systems. |
