Abstract Scope JIS ADC12 (equivalent to A383) aluminum casting alloy is widely used for high pressure die-casting methods, and it contains high Si (9.6 - 12.0 %) and Cu (1.5 - 3.5 %). These alloy elements improve material fluidity in the casting process and the strength of casting products, but they decrease elongation and corrosion resistance. In this study, the aim was to reduce these alloy elements by using a fractional crystallization process to recycle casting alloy. The molten ADC12 alloy was cooled while electromagnetic stirring (EMS) was applied. Then, the semi-solid alloy was separated into a purified fraction and a residue containing impurities using a perforated metal plate. The purified fractions had a lower Si and Cu concentration. These results suggest the potential for recycling casting aluminum alloy scraps into a purer alloy.
