| Abstract Scope |
Single-crystal piezoelectric materials exhibit high piezoelectric performance, but their high brittleness makes them difficult to apply postprocessing. Brittle characteristics can be overcome by applying ductile machining techniques. In this study, ductile machining using laser-assisted diamond turning was demonstrate on single crystal piezoelectric material for curved shape processing. The application of laser assisted machining reduces the occurrence of surface cracks. The acoustic emission signal generated during machining was analyzed according to the machining method, and the acoustic signal generated during machining was reduced with reduction of crack occurrence. Based on the machined single crystal piezoelectric materials, piston type ultrasonic transducers were fabricated for validation of their performance. It was verified that the acoustic field can be modulated by shaping of the single crystal piezoelectric material through laser-assisted machining.
