Abstract Scope |
Rapid solidification inherited metastability has been widely reported in eutectics which often results in enhanced physical properties. In this work, laser surface remelting of Al-Ge cast eutectic alloy has been performed, which has not only refined the microstructure to nano-scale due to high cooling rate, but also incurred the formation of metastable crystal structures in AlxGey intermetallic eutectic phases. The crystal structures and compositions of the intermetallics were fully indexed as monoclinic [C 2/c] Al6Ge5 and monoclinic [P 21] AlGe, with the aids of electron diffraction, high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, and atomistic simulation. These metastable phases exhibit a high density of dislocations, growth-induced twins and planar faults. Kinetic phase diagrams corresponding to the far-from-equilibrium eutectic reactions were determined to interpret the metastable crystal structures in AlxGey intermetallic and Al(Ge) nano-precipitates in Al. |
