By now, heterogeneous materials with harmonic-structure (HS) design are well established in the research community as one of the top-performers with a unique strength-ductility combination. Nevertheless, the unique combination of aforementioned mechanical properties is not well understood and explained in terms of microarchitecture-property relationship. Our own contributions into the field include the development of analytical and finite-element models along with experimental in situ studies based on employing digital-image correlation and advanced synchrotron-based techniques. In this talk, we present analytical models along with experimental confirmations explaining how microarchitecture-induced stress and strain partitioning in HS materials lead to the unique deformation mechanisms at elastic-plastic transition and developed plastic deformation stages. While the former enable better performance than traditional composites and rule-of-mixture expectations in general, the latter also reveals self-similarity in stress-strain behaviour. These discoveries simplify the mathematical description of HS and help unravelling hidden patterns in their deformation mechanisms. |
