Abstract Scope |
Vat photopolymerization allows access to technical ceramics with complex geometries with high resolutions but faces challenges with materials such as silicon carbide due to strong light scattering effects. Current efforts in manufacturing silicon carbide ceramics have resulted in trade-offs between curing behaviour (resolution and cure depth) and final ceramic properties. Herein, two methods are presented to access either dense or porous silicon carbide ceramics, with strategies anchored in improving both the cure behaviour and final obtained properties. A particle coating strategy is adopted to enhance both the cure depth and density of silicon carbide ceramics, yielding decent mechanical and thermal properties. Separately, an emulsion templating strategy minimises defects arising from thermal processing for porous silicon carbides. The resultant hierarchical microstructure provides superior properties compared to their conventional counterparts. These strategies optimise cure behaviour and final ceramic properties, paving the way for applications as next generation heat sinks or catalyst supports. |
