Abstract Scope Preheating in LPBF is commonly employed to reduce residual stresses in as-built metallic components. This study examines the effect of baseplate preheating and selective laser preheating (the latter being less common to LPBF) on the residual stress (RS) state of Ti-6Al-4V components via neutron diffraction. Selective laser preheating is carried out using two lasers simultaneously in a leading-trailing format. Neutron diffraction experiments were carried out at the SALSA beamline at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in France; where, owing to the instrument’s excellent penetration depths, we mapped the strain of industrial scale components in their as-built condition on their baseplates. Four samples, each with a different preheating condition, were measured and significant changes were observed between them. The most tensile RS state was observed for the sample without any preheating. These findings highlight the potential of selecting between preheats to tune the as-built RS state for the end-use application.
