Abstract Scope |
MXenes and transition metal carbo-chalcogenides (TMCCs) are 2D materials with promising potential for use in electrochemical energy storage (EES) and conversion. MXenes are composed of Mn+1XnTx, where M is an early transition metal, X is either carbon or nitrogen, and Tx represents surface terminations. They are produced by selective etching of metal layers from layered ceramics. TMCCs are electrically conductive and catalytically active due to their carbide core and chalcogenides surface, respectively. They are produced by solid-state synthesis followed by ions intercalation, and exfoliation in water. Hybrids of 2D materials with polymeric cations can significantly alter their behavior in various applications, e.g., we found that MXene hybrids with alkylammonium chains have specific capacitance of 257 F/g, over > 3V, when tested in room temperature ionic liquid electrolyte. We report on the synthesis and characterization of TMCCs, MXenes, and their hybrids, and their performance as electrode materials for EES and conversion. |
