Abstract Scope |
Ultra-high strength martensitic steels with strength levels in excess of 1.2GPa are one of the most widely sought after structural materials for automotive applications. These steels are produced by rapid quenching from the austenitic phase resulting in the formation of martensitic substructure within the prior austenite grains (PAGs). In this work, we attempt to quantify the effect of PAG size and martensitic substructure on the deformation and fracture response of martensitic steels. To this end, the steel of interest is subjected to five heat treatments and the resultant microstructures are characterized via EBSD. The smooth and notched sheet specimens of the steels with different PAG size and martensitic substructure are deformed under tension inside a microscope. Thus, allowing us to capture both the macroscopic response and the distribution of microscale strains. The presentation will focus on the results correlating the microstructure, microscale deformation and macroscale mechanical response of the material. |
