Abstract Scope The present research investigates the influence of post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) on the mechanical properties of friction stir welded (FSWed) AA6061-T6 aluminum alloy. The microstructure and precipitation studies in the stir zone have been characterized by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), followed by energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis. The tensile strength, microhardness mapping, and fatigue life test results show that the joint has superior mechanical properties after heat treatment than the as-welded condition (no heat treatment). SEM and EDS analyses also confirm that the improvement of mechanical properties is due to the re-precipitation and dispersion strengthening of fine precipitates within the heat-treated FSW joint.
