Abstract Scope |
A key challenge to the use of uranium nitride within light water reactors is the energetic steam reaction which occurs at relatively low temperatures. Despite the potential benefits over current oxide fuels. this has so-far prevented the use of nitride within LWRs. The addition of uranium diboride to uranium nitride has shown promising results in preliminary trials, including an increase in onset temperature of ~150K, high thermal conductivity at the pellet scale and an improvement in sintering performance via the SPS technique. This presentation will give an overview of work developing this promising fuel form at Manchester along with international colleagues, and highlight recent results which may illuminate alternative pathways to improving nitride performance alongside UN-UB2 composites. |
