Abstract Scope |
Two variants of ultrasonic welding methods were explored to join large dissimilar structures for automotive applications. One was ultrasonic spot welding (USW) for joining dissimilar metal-metal structures. The weldability of the dissimilar metal pairs including immiscible pairs (e.g. magnesium and iron) was investigated. To address the issue encountered in the conventional USW approach (i.e. impact of vibration on joint quality of multi-joint large components), a novel in-process monitoring and control approach was developed to ensure the consistency joint quality. The other variant of the ultrasonic welding was a newly patented process called ultrasonic rivet joining (URJ) which was mostly used to join metal and polymer pairs. A variety of joining conditions were investigated and post-weld characterizations were performed for evaluation. |
