Plastic deformation of titanium is intricate, involving various slip and twin systems that activate under different loading conditions. These systems can occur and interact simultaneously based on the crystal orientation, making it challenging to understand deformation behavior of Ti. Therefore, selecting the appropriate crystal orientation is crucial to isolate a single system. To study different deformation mechanisms, we fabricated site-specific dog bone thin films using FIB and attached to push-to-pull device with a specialized setup. Nano-mechanical testing was performed under TEM with picoindenter, enabling to precisely identify the onset of dislocation motion and twin formation to calculate their corresponding critical resolved shear stress (CRSS). Experimentally measured CRSS values exhibit excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions that utilize energy minimization algorithm for determining the core structures and glide barriers of dislocations. This technique is also used to characterize the micro-mechanisms of plastic deformation in titanium, which is significantly influenced by cross-slipping. |
