One of the most challenging aspects for future use of Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) is to find structural materials that can withstand corrosion in halide salts at 600-700°C.
The main objective of our study is to assess the substitution of Cr with Al in a Ni70Mo10Cr20-xAlx system on its corrosion resistance in a representative environment of MSRs.
Corrosion tests were performed by immersion in NaCl-MgCl2 at 600°C for 168 h and ageing were performed at 600°C for 720h in sealed glass ampoules under Argon atmosphere without salt. Alloys were characterized by SEM-EDS/X, XRD, hardness measurements, compressive tests, mass loss and XPS.
Our results show that it is possible to form an oxide layer (Mg-Al-Mo-O type) for an Al content higher than 5% at. The best tradeoff between corrosion resistance, and thermal stability of microstructure and mechanical properties is found for the composition Ni70Mo10Cr12.5Al7.5 (in at%). |
