Abstract Scope |
Metal AM typically utilizes powder as feed. Fill impact welding, a ballistic additive manufacturing technique, uses dime-sized pieces of sheet metal launched at over 300m/s to impact and weld to the metallic substrate. The driving force can be generated by several means, including electrically vaporized foil actuators used in this work. Here, fill impact welding has been utilized for creating heterogeneous welds between dissimilar metals (1018 steel and 6061-T6 aluminum alloy) and for filling back up a pre-machined pocket in a 5052 aluminum alloy plate. The former application resembles arc welding, while the latter represents a potential repair technique, but both are done while maintaining the filler metal in solid state throughout the process. Characterization of the samples show negligible differences between the AM part and the parent material. Process steps, key measured parameters, resulting microstructure and mechanical properties are presented along with the future outlook for equipment and applications. |
