Abstract Scope |
Recent developments of new advanced high strength sheet steels (AHSS) essential to enable automotive lightweighting will be presented. Steels of interest include DP (dual phase), TRIP (transformation induced plasticity), HSLA (high strength low alloy), Q&P (quenched and partitioned), medium-manganese, and martensitic. Properties of the primarily low carbon, low alloy steels are derived through careful control of time-temperature processing histories designed to produce multiphase microstructures that include ferrite, martensite, retained austenite and other constituents. Fundamental DP and TRIP steel research in the 1970’s and 1980’s that identified many critical processing parameters and microstructural combinations leading to high-strength formable sheet steels will be reviewed and used to illustrate the basis for “Third-Generation” (3G) AHSS products currently under development and being commercialized. Selected contributions of Dr. Anil K. Sachdev’s early DP steel research will be highlighted. Implications of 3GAHSS processing and alloying strategies on advanced manufacturing techniques will also be considered. |
