Abstract Scope |
Four novel low-Cr (~7%Cr) nickel alloys with tailored strengthening mechanisms (solid solution, carbide, and gamma-prime strengthened) have been investigated for use in molten salt reactors. Alloys were cast, homogenized, and annealed to achieve equiaxed grain structures and optimized carbide and or gamma prime precipitates. Heat treatment times and temperatures were varied to determine kinetic activation energies and optimized processing conditions. Creep tests were performed at 750C, 138 MPa and 600C, 310 MPa and compared with Hastelloy N results. Tensile tests were also performed at room temperature and 750C. The gamma prime strengthened ORNL 7 alloy and the carbide strengthened ORNL 3 alloy provided over 200% improvement in tensile strength at temperatures from 25-750C, and over 500% increase in creep properties at 750C. Strengthening mechanisms were investigated using electron microscopy and diffraction techniques. |
