Abstract Scope |
In this presentation dedicated to Professor Nakamura, I plan to present highlights from our research dealing with clean environmental technologies from stabilization of hazardous wastes to recycling of battery materials. In terms of environmental work, we will outline recent advances in isolating/immobilizing hazardous elements like As, Sb, and Se. Here we will refer to production of gypsum-free scorodite under iron-dissolution controlled supersaturation regime. Their additional stabilization by aluminum gels which lead to mineralized encapsulating coatings. Immobilization of antimony (V) in the form of the synthetic mineral tripuhite, and elimination of Se(VI) via photocatalysis. Recently our attention has shifted to battery recycling. Moving away from standard pyro or hydro processes, we have worked towards the most sustainable route which is “direct recycling” that aims to recover the whole active electrode compound and not merely the metals. This has been successfully demonstrated in the case of spent LiFePO4 and NMC batteries. |
