Abstract Scope |
AM of Cu, Au, or Ag alloys presents challenges due to high refelctivity, thermal conductivity and oxidation susceptibility, complicating laser- and powder-based processes by causing instability in the melt pool and non-uniform material deposition. Additionally, fabricating small-scale, multi-material AM structures is difficult due to the need for precise control over dissimila material deposition and bonding.
To address these issues, a new wire-fed e-beam directed energy deposition (DED) setup has been designed, based on a micro e-beam welding system with an xyz-rotation stage, cooling system, and wire feeder. This setup enables precise control of the deposition process and the use of wires as small as 200 µm. The study presents initial results for fabricating Cu-Ti parts by welding Cu sheets onto Ti substrates and using 500 µm Cu wire on Ti substrates. These samples were characterized for interfacial microstructure, providing insights into bonding quality and potential applications. |
