Abstract Scope Samples of malachite (Cu2CO3(OH)2) ore were heated for 40 min in a domestic microwave oven in the absence and presence of end-of-life polyethylene terephthalate and sawdust. Calcined products were characterised by XRF and XRD analyses and the extent of calcination after 40 min was calculated. The results showed a calcination process that was accompanied by maximum weight loss of 38.50%, 51.09%, and 60.20% in the absence of carbonaceous material, presence of sawdust, and presence of PET, respectively. XRF analysis showed an upgrade in the content of copper from 54.33% in malachite to 76.59, 76.10, and 78.79% for raw calcination, presence of sawdust, and presence of PET, respectively. Results from XRD analysis of the calcined samples showed sharp peaks dominated by tenorite (CuO) with significant proportions of cuprite (Cu2O). Measured extent of calcination improved from 95.87% for raw calcination to 98.63% for calcination in the presence of PET.
