Abstract Scope |
Due to the increasing need for reducing energy consumption, the automotive industry has a strong interest in developing vehicle structures that adhere to this environmentally friendly initiative. This is to be accomplished via methods that allow for vehicle lightweighting. Body-in-white designs that are capable of accomplishing a lightweight structure take careful consideration into what materials are incorporated to make these structures. Advanced high-strength steels and aluminum alloys are used in these designs where the joining is done using resistance spot welding. Resistance spot welding is a joining technique that is primarily chosen by the automotive industry. But when joining these materials using conventional resistance spot welding techniques, complex issues can arise. This study aims to use an innovative interlayer approach to apply an interlayer between the two sheets of material to be welded. The steel used in this study was a press-hardened boron steel that has a 2000 MPa UTS and the aluminum was a 6022 aluminum alloy in the T4 condition. Foil interlayers were specifically chosen to improve the weldability of these materials where mechanical performance and joint efficiency were compared. Through this method, an improvement for all welds was found in terms of joint efficiency when an interlayer was applied prior to resistance spot welding. |
