Abstract Scope |
The efficient qualification of advanced nuclear fuel materials is crucial for enhancing the safety and performance of advanced nuclear reactor designs. This study focuses on the investigation of proton irradiation effects on uranium nitride (UN) fuel and (U,Zr)N SIMFUEL composites. The fuel samples were proton irradiated to emulate the neutron damage that the fuel experiences inside the reactor core. We target to comprehensively understand the behaviour of UN under irradiation conditions by varying the dose and burn-up through the use of different SIMFUEL compositions. Detailed pre- and post-characterization of the surface and bulk microstructural changes, mechanical properties, and performance characteristics contributes to a deeper understanding of the response of UN fuel to irradiation under various doses and burn-up, facilitating its future implementation in advanced nuclear systems. |
