Abstract Scope |
The computational study examines the electrical and magnetohydrodynamic effects of the combination of the anode-cathode arrangement and cathode rodding in aluminium reduction cells. The results indicate that in the case of uniform rodding, the horizontal current is the least when the anode edge is slightly outside the cathode. The horizontal current increases near the sidewall as the anode edge is shifted towards the centre. When the length of the rodding is reduced at the cathode end, the horizontal current directed towards the sidewalls reduces. However, below a minimum rodding length, the horizontal current changes the direction majorly towards the centre. The magnitude of the horizontal current towards and away from the centre remains balanced if the anode and cathode edges coincide. The magnetohydrodynamic study of the metal-bath interface is also discussed to identify the best combination of the cathode design and the anode-cathode arrangement. |
