Abstract Scope This presentation will be focused on presenting technical R&D recommendations given to ArcelorMittal Long Product Contrecoeur East through CFD calculations to identify the possibilities to optimize the tundish internal design and thus, to favor large inclusion floatation/elimination. The results showed that no big inclusions go to the different strands during continuous casting, but rather during ladle change (low level in the tundish and high metal throughput). In that case, the cleaning efficiency is lower and large inclusions (>200 µm) are transported to the outlets of the tundish, especially to the ones close to the center of the tundish. Based on further simulations made by R&D, new recommendations were given to the plant and after revamping, very encouraging results were noted during the casting trials. Currently, the plant is willing to revamp other tundishes located to other meltshops.
