Abstract Scope |
A successful closed-loop direct recycling process for lithium-ion batteries must incorporate recovery of all component materials. To date, the low inherent value of graphite has challenged anode recovery efforts. However, significant engineered value exists in end-of-life graphite due to the presence of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). Battery formation is time intensive and expensive requiring excess Li inventory to form a stable SEI on the graphite anode. A pre-formed and optimized SEI, capitalizing on existing SEI components from end-of-life batteries, would minimize cathode relithiation requirements and would also significantly reduce or eliminate the critical bottleneck of formation cycling during reprocessing. In this work, we develop techniques for quantitative delineation of SEI quality in cycled and upcycled graphite anodes using coupled experimental testing, characterization, and advanced electrochemical modeling. Refurbishment of the aged graphite anode is achieved through a two-fold process: (i) targeted solvent washing which removes adverse species and retains beneficial SEI compounds, and (ii) graphite surface functionalization with conductive-polymeric additives to improve mechanical, thermal stability and improve rate performance. We demonstrate successful upcycling of aged graphite with comparable SEI film and charge transfer resistances to pristine graphite. |
