| Abstract Scope |
The International Institute of Welding (IIW) is embarking on strategic initiatives in three broad areas with significant impact on the future of welding and allied processes. These three initiatives include fundamental and specific research and the applications of such research in the welding and joining industries. The first initiative, applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), includes but is not limited to material analysis, material design and processing, welding and joining systems and optimization, process optimization, process and quality monitoring, nondestructive testing applications, personnel training and production monitoring, and safety. The second initiative, applications of Intelligent Manufacturing (IM), also called Smart Manufacturing, drives specific manufacturing decisions and optimization toward increased productivity, quality improvement, cost reduction, and reduced environmental impact. The third initiative, applications of Additive Manufacturing (AM), has a focus on design, development, and production, primarily with Directed Energy Deposition. The eighteen technical Commissions of IIW are focused on Joining Processes, Structural Integrity, and Industry Support, and collaborate to advance these and other topics by sharing information from research, with the goal of aiding industry and developing best practices in these fields. The American Council of the IIW (ACIIW) represents, works with, and connects US researchers and industry in these and other welding and joining fields. |
