Abstract Scope |
Tungsten is a candidate material for plasma facing components in fusion reactors owing to its properties such as high melting point, high thermal conductivity, low sputtering yield, resistance to hydrogen isotopes, etc. Due to the poor machinability of tungsten, there is an increasing interest to fabricate tungsten parts using additive manufacturing. However, tungsten built with laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF-LB) is prone to cracking.
The deflection speed of the beam in electron beam powder bed fusion process (PBF-EB) is orders of magnitude higher than PBF-LB. Inertia-free high deflection speed of the electron beam facilitates unique scanning strategies enabling capabilities such as thermal management, microstructure tailoring, etc. In this study, we demonstrate manufacturing of fully dense and crack-free pure tungsten and explore innovative spot melting strategies beyond the conventional hatch strategy. Process-microstructure-properties relationships for different e-beam scanning patterns are investigated. Video material will be used for illustration. |
