Abstract Scope |
Microstructural quantification of austenite and ferrite phases in terms of volume fraction and carbon content during isothermal bainite transformation (IBT) is paramount to tailor properties of nano-bainitic, TRIP steels. These parameters are quantifiable, however, only at the end of dilatometric IBT heat treatment through microstructural analyses. Even so, such quantification, is fraught with limitations, such as non-consideration of transformation of untransformed austenite on cooling post IBT. The present work has, therefore, endeavored to estimate such parameters during IBT from experimental dilatogram itself by accounting the nuances of the transformation, such as film and blocky austenite morphologies and their inhomogeneous carbon distribution. Employing the devised model, microstructural quantifications have been carried out in a low-carbon low-alloy carbide-free bainitic steel during IBT between 375 to 450 oC. The observed trends in the estimated microstructural parameters were in consonance with the findings of SEM and XRD investigations. |
