Abstract Scope |
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are functional materials exhibiting specific shape memory and superelastic effects, and additive manufacturing (AM) offers new processing capabilities. Besides, Cu-based SMAs are attracting the attention because of their good thermo-mechanical properties. However, AM of Cu-based SMAs constitutes a challenge due to the inherent processing difficulties, in particular the noticeable shift that the martensitic transformation temperatures (MTT) undergo during the processing route, from powder atomization to the final AM. This shift makes difficult the AM processing of SMAs for specific applications.
In the present work, a new methodology is proposed to solve this problem, by micro-alloying of different pre-alloyed powders at the melt pool during laser powder bed fusion. Excellent results, on microstructure and functional properties have been obtained as well as the control the MTT in a very precise way, paving the road for an efficient production of SMA that could be implemented in industrial applications. |
