Abstract Scope |
Quasicrystals, due to their outstanding properties such as low thermal conductivity and high hardness from lack of translational invariance properties, are thought to be good candidates for first wall material of fusion reactors. Since such structural materials are constantly subjected to radiation damage, it is critical for materials to be resistant to radiation damage with reduced property degradation. In this research, we investigated irradiation resistance of Ti-Zr-Ni icosahedral quasicrystals using Helium ion irradiation and how the response differs with different grain size via tuning of cooling rate. In addition, after irradiation we utilized nanoindentation to investigate the change in mechanical properties. We expect this research to give more insights on the application of quasicrystals as structural materials for fusion reactors. |
