Abstract Scope |
There has been a recent explosion of interest in fungi and fungi-based materials for a variety of applications including environmentally-friendly structural and packaging materials, textile and leather alternatives, biomedical materials, and next-generation filtration media, to name a few. Despite this economic potential, and the incredible wealth of research into the biomechanics of other biological tissues originating from the animal and plant kingdoms, the biomechanics of the materials from Kingdom Fungi has been largely unstudied. This is surprising as fungi are found thriving in all biomes. This presentation will discuss our novel research into the biomechanics of a variety of fungi as well as their application towards bioinspired designs. |
