Abstract Scope |
Corrosion, the environmental degradation of materials, has been a critically important topic in materials science and engineering over the past century. Even though it has been studied since the days of Michael Faraday in the mid 1800s, corrosion remains a challenging and relevant field of study as there continue to be new materials, environments, approaches and expectations for material performance. This talk will summarize the activities in the field of corrosion over the past century, including the development of electrochemical methods (e.g. EIS), the use of surface science analytical techniques (e.g. AES and XPS), technical applications that have been areas of extreme focus (e.g. nuclear power applications), and some topics that have been “hot” for a period but then became less of a focus (e.g. hydrogen evolution on Mg). The talk will conclude with a summary of the current “hot” topics in the corrosion field. |
