Abstract Scope |
This study provides practical guidelines for thermoplastic forming (TPF) that can be effectively utilized when designing manufacturing roadmaps of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). We constructed the continuous-heating-transformation (CHT) curves and iso-viscosity contours of LM1b alloy, a well-known BMG. We identified the favorable heating rate and process temperature for the TPF in terms of viscosity. Based on this, three TPF processes of pressing, joining, and hologram nanopatterning were performed smoothly. A novel thermoplastic forming ability (TPFA) parameter, P, was proposed to compare the TPFA among several BMGs, considering both supercooled liquid viscosity and crystallization kinetics. Using the P parameter, it was demonstrated that the TPFA improves despite a decrease in crystallization incubation time with increasing heating rate. The findings of this study provide a valuable foundation for the development of practical TPF processes for the commercialization of BMGs in a variety of applications ranging from bulk to nano-scale. |
