Abstract Scope |
Mechanochemical processing is used to realize high-temperature reactions at ambient conditions. Similarly, catalysis achieves chemical transformations efficiently and under milder conditions by employing catalysts that increase reaction rates and reduce activation energy without being consumed. Merging these two approaches into "mechano-catalysis" creates a synergistic effect, enhancing the efficiency, rate, and scope of chemical transformations further. With significant efforts directed towards clean manufacturing, particularly in hard-to-electrify industries, there is a pressing need to lower energy consumption and increase reaction efficiency and kinetics. Mechano-catalysis has the potential to become the disruptive technology that meets these needs. One such application of mechano-catalysis is in carbon hydrogasification to form methane and longer-chain hydrocarbons. In this work, we demonstrate that mechano-catalysis can substantially reduce the activation energy required for these reactions, enabling them to proceed at ambient conditions and significantly enhancing reaction rates which conserves energy and opens up pathways for sustainable chemical manufacturing. |
